Engineered Wood Flooring UK

Engineered wood flooring is made from a real hardwood wear layer, usually oak, bonded on top of a stable, multi-layer core, typically plywood or high-density board. It looks and feels like solid timber, but the layered construction makes it far less likely to move with changes in temperature and humidity.

It depends on what you need. Engineered wood is generally more practical for UK homes: it's more stable, works with underfloor heating, and handles humidity swings better. Solid wood offers a longer refinishing life and a more traditional, single-species feel, but needs more careful conditions.

Engineered wood has a real timber wear layer on the surface, so what you see and feel is genuine wood. Laminate has a printed image of wood under a protective layer, so it's not real timber at any point. Laminate is generally cheaper and slightly more scratch-resistant; engineered wood offers authentic grain and can be refinished.

Yes, in most cases — engineered wood's layered, cross-grain construction makes it significantly more stable with underfloor heating than solid wood. Suitability still varies by product, so always check the individual specification and follow the manufacturer's guidance on subfloor moisture, acclimatization and maximum floor temperature (typically around 27°C).

A well-maintained engineered wood floor typically lasts 25 years or more, and can be sanded and refinished a number of times over its life, depending on the thickness of the real wood wear layer.

No. Engineered wood is more moisture-resistant than solid wood, but it isn't waterproof, and standing water or prolonged damp can still damage it. LVT, SPC or WPC vinyl is a safer choice for rooms with genuine flood or spill risk.

It can, but choose a stable, well-sealed product and keep it away from areas with the highest spill risk, like directly in front of a sink or dishwasher. For heavy daily water use, a waterproof LVT or SPC floor may suit that room better.

In many cases, yes — a floating engineered floor can often be laid over an existing hard, flat, well-bonded floor such as vinyl or tiles. It's not usually recommended over carpet, and glue-down or nail-down methods generally need the old flooring removed first.

It can be, with the right choice of finish. A harder-wearing lacquered finish with a decent wear layer copes reasonably well with claws and everyday scuffs, though no wood floor is fully scratch-proof.

There's no single best thickness — it depends on the room and fitting method. Thicker boards with a deeper wear layer generally offer more stability and refinishing life, while thinner boards can suit budget projects or lower-profile doorways.

Yes, but how many times depends entirely on the thickness of the real wood wear layer. A thicker wear layer might allow two or three full refinishes; a thinner one may only allow one.

For most UK homes, yes: you get the genuine look and feel of real wood, with far better day-to-day stability than solid wood, at a lower price point than solid hardwood.
