BENEFITS & ADVANTAGES

Benefits of Solid Wood Flooring UK Homeowners Should Know

Solid wood is the oldest flooring choice in British homes and it remains the one people come back to. Here is what a solid timber floor gives you that no other product can copy, from a surface you can restore rather than throw away to the natural warmth that lifts a whole room.

SOLID TIMBER THROUGHOUT
Every board is milled from one piece of hardwood, most often European or American oak. There is no core layer, no veneer and no photographic film, so the floor is the same material all the way down.
SAND AND REFINISH FOR DECADES
An 18mm or 20mm solid board carries enough thickness above the tongue to be sanded several times across its life. Scratches, dents, pet marks and dated colours can be corrected rather than lived with.
ADDS VALUE TO YOUR HOME
Buyers and valuers recognise real wood. A well laid solid oak floor is treated as a permanent feature of the property, in the same way as a good kitchen, rather than a floor covering waiting to be replaced.
NATURAL CHARACTER IN EVERY BOARD
Grain, knots, medullary rays and color movement change from plank to plank, so no two floors are ever identical. The tone deepens gently as the timber ages and settles into the room.
WARM & COMFORTABLE UNDERFOOT
Timber holds warmth far better than tile or stone, so a solid floor feels comfortable in winter and never has the cold, hard feel of a hard surface floor.
HEALTHY AND SIMPLE TO KEEP CLEAN
A sealed wood floor holds far less dust and pet hair than carpet, sweeps and mops quickly, and suits households where allergies are a concern.

SPECIFICATION

Solid Wood Species, Thickness and Board Sizes

The specification of a solid board decides how it looks, how it fits and how long it will serve you. These are the numbers worth understanding before you order, and the ones our team will ask you about if you call.

European Oak

The most popular hardwood in British homes. Warm honey tones, tight grain and excellent hardness, and it takes stains, oils and smoking treatments beautifully.

American Oak

Slightly straighter and more even in grain than European oak, with a softer color spread. A good option where you want a calmer, more uniform floor.

Other hardwoods

Walnut, ash and maple are available on request. Walnut brings deep chocolate tones, ash is pale and modern, and maple is very light with minimal grain.

THE SMARTER CHOICE

Solid Wood Flooring vs Other Flooring Options

Real wood, engineered wood and wood effect products can look similar in a photograph but they behave very differently once they are down. Here is a fair comparison so you can see where solid timber is the right answer and where it is not.

01
SOLID vs ENGINEERED

Solid Wood Flooring vs Engineered Wood Flooring

Both provide a real hardwood surface. Solid wood is one piece, reacts more to humidity, and can be sanded more often. Engineered wood is layered for stability and is better for underfloor heating or concrete subfloors.

Feature Solid Wood Engineered Wood
Construction One piece of timber Hardwood top on a ply base
Refinishing life Several sands across decades Limited by the wear layer
Underfloor heating Not generally suitable Widely suitable
Movement with humidity Higher Lower
Installation Secret nailed or fully glued Glued, nailed or floating
02
SOLID VS SPC AND LVT

Solid Wood Flooring vs SPC and Vinyl Flooring

SPC and LVT are waterproof and hard wearing, which makes them the sensible choice for bathrooms, utility rooms and wet areas. Solid wood is not waterproof and should not go in those rooms. Where moisture is not the issue, solid wood gives you warmth, authenticity and a surface that can be restored rather than simply worn down.

Feature Solid Wood SPC and LVT
Material Natural hardwood Stone or vinyl composite
Wet rooms Not suitable Suitable
Feel underfoot Warm and natural Firm and uniform
Repairable Yes, by sanding Replace planks only
Typical lifespan Fifty years and beyond Fifteen to twenty five years
WHERE SOLID FLOORING WORKS

Where Can Solid Wood Flooring Be Installed?

Solid wood belongs in the dry, heated rooms of a home where it can settle and stay stable. Being straight with you about where it should not go is just as useful, so we have covered that as well.
We don’t recommend solid wood in bathrooms, wet rooms, cellars, conservatories, or over underfloor heating. Engineered wood or SPC is better for these areas.

01

Solid Wood Flooring for Living Rooms

Wide oak planks suit living rooms beautifully, bringing warmth and a sense of space that carpet cannot match, and standing up to daily family use.

02

Solid Wood Flooring for Bedrooms

A quiet, low traffic room is ideal for solid timber. Pair the boards with rugs for softness underfoot while keeping the natural wood on show.

03

Solid Wood Flooring for Hallways and Dining Rooms

Herringbone and chevron blocks give hallways and dining rooms a formal, well finished look that handles constant footfall.

Period Properties and Renovations

Solid boards fixed over joists or battens are the natural fit for older homes, matching original floors and suiting restoration work where authenticity matters.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

Solid Wood Flooring Installation Guide

Most problems with solid wood floors trace back to installation rather than the timber itself. Work through these four stages and your floor will settle properly and stay flat for years.

01

Acclimatize the Boards

Leave flooring unopened in the room for 7–14 days so it adjusts to the room’s temperature and humidity. This prevents gaps later.

02

Check and Prepare the Subfloor

Make sure the subfloor is clean, dry, level, and sound. Remove debris and add a damp proof membrane if needed.

03

Choose the Fixing Method

Fix solid wood by secret nailing into timber or fully bonding with flexible adhesive. Never lay it loose or over underlay. Leave a 10–15mm expansion gap around all edges.

04

Finishing and Aftercare

Sand and seal unfinished boards after laying. Use felt pads on furniture, doormats at entrances, and clean with a damp mop.

SOLID WOOD FLOORING COST UK

How Much Does Solid Wood Flooring Cost in the UK?

Solid wood flooring in the UK typically costs £30–£80 per square meter, depending on species, grade, size, and finish. Fitting is extra, usually £20–£40 per square meter, based on layout and subfloor.
TIER
PRICE PER M²
WHAT YOU GET
Budget solid wood
£30–£40 per m²
Narrower boards, rustic grade oak with more knots and color movement, straightforward lacquered finishes. A sound choice for bedrooms and projects on a tighter budget.
Mid range solid wood
£45–£65 per m²
Wider planks, natural or select grade, brushed and oiled finishes with better consistency. The bracket most family homes choose.
Premium solid wood
£65+ per m²
Extra wide and long boards, prime grade timber, hard wax oiled and smoked finishes, herringbone and chevron blocks and specialist species such as walnut.

Also budget for: adhesive or secret nails, plywood if the subfloor needs a deck, beading or new skirting, threshold bars, and finishing oil if you have chosen unfinished boards.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR FLOOR

How to Care For and Refinish a Solid Wood Floor

A solid wood floor asks very little of you, but the small habits matter. Follow these and the floor will still look right in twenty years, and when it finally does need attention it can be brought back rather than pulled up

01

Sweep or vacuum regularly

Sweep or vacuum with a soft brush head to lift grit, which is what actually scratches a wood floor

02

Use a Damp Mop Only

Clean with a barely damp mop and a cleaner made for wood floors. Never use a steam cleaner and never leave water standing

03

Wipe Spills Immediately

Wipe spills as soon as they happen rather than letting them sit.

04

Protect Furniture Legs

Fit felt pads under furniture legs and lift furniture rather than dragging it.

05

Use Doormats and Rugs

Use doormats at external doors and rugs in the busiest walkways.

Maintain Healthy Humidity
06

Maintain Healthy Humidity

Keep indoor humidity roughly between forty five and sixty five per cent. In a very dry winter house, a humidifier helps prevent gapping.
