The Professional’s Guide to Gluing Down Engineered Wood Flooring

  • 8 min reading time

Are you looking for the most stable and premium feel for your new floor? While floating installations are popular for their ease, gluing down engineered wood flooring is the gold standard for homeowners seeking a solid, permanent, and high-end finish.
At , we believe that the right installation method is just as important as the quality of the wood itself. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of a professional glue-down installation, ensuring your floor looks stunning and lasts for decades.

Why Choose the Glue-Down Method?

The "glue-down" technique involves bonding your engineered wood planks directly to the subfloor using a high-quality adhesive. Unlike floating floors, which can sometimes have a "hollow" sound or slight movement, a glued floor feels:
Rock Solid: No shifting or bouncing underfoot.
Quiet: Significantly reduces impact noise and the "drum" effect.
Perfect for Underfloor Heating: Provides superior heat transfer compared to floating methods.
Ideal for Large Areas: Eliminates the need for frequent expansion breaks in open-plan spaces.

Essential Pre-Installation Checklist

Before you open a single tub of adhesive, preparation is key. Skipping these steps is the most common cause of flooring failure.

1. Acclimatisation

Your wood is a natural product. It needs to adjust to your home's temperature and humidity. Store your planks in the room where they will be installed for at least 72 hours.

2. Subfloor Preparation

Your subfloor must be flat, dry, and clean.
Concrete Subfloors: Must be fully cured. We strongly recommend using a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) to prevent moisture from rising into the wood.
Wooden Subfloors: Ensure boards are secure. For the best results, over-ply the area with 6mm flooring-grade plywood to create a perfectly smooth surface.
Moisture Testing: Use a moisture meter to ensure levels are between 6-9%.

Step-by-Step Glue-Down Installation

Step 1: Establish Your Starting Line

Choose the longest, straightest wall in the room. Use a chalk line to mark your "starter zone"—usually about two to three planks wide. This helps you stay straight and manage your adhesive application.

Step 2: Applying the Adhesive

Using a notched trowel, spread an even layer of MS Polymer wood flooring adhesive within your starter zone.

Pro Tip: Only apply as much glue as you can cover in 20-30 minutes to prevent the adhesive from "skinning over" before the wood is laid.

Step 3: Laying the First Rows

Place your first plank with the groove facing the wall, leaving a 10mm expansion gap using spacers. This gap is vital to allow the wood to breathe. Apply a small amount of D4 wood glue to the header joints (the short ends) for extra security, then press the plank firmly into the floor adhesive.

Step 4: Staggering for a Natural Look

To achieve a professional, "pukka" finish, always stagger your joints. Ensure the end joints of adjacent rows are at least 15-20cm apart. This not only looks better but also adds structural integrity to the floor.

Step 5: The Final Row

Measure the remaining gap for the last row, remembering to subtract your 10mm expansion gap. You may need a pull bar to snugly fit these final pieces into place.

Finishing Touches

Once the floor is laid, avoid walking on it for at least 24 hours to allow the adhesive to fully cure. Remove your spacers and cover the expansion gaps with matching skirting boards or scotia beading for a seamless transition.

Maintenance Tip

If any adhesive gets on the surface of your beautiful new planks, wipe it off immediately with a damp cloth or specialist adhesive remover. Once dry, wood glue can be very difficult to remove without damaging the finish.
